Jen Garbin

Rev Dr Jen Garbin, BA, MDiv, DMin
Regional Minister

Jen wears many hats: Regional Minister for Canada, church planter, the mother of two grown children (Rita and Rowan), and a life-long student. She has completed her Doctor of Ministry at Emmanuel College (TST), which focused on lifting up the missing voice and exploring the faith practice of English-speaking Canadian Christian emerging adults who don't actively attend public worship but are still living out their faith. She has led numerous workshops and open space forums around re-imaging what it means to be church in the 21st century, working with young adults, and mobilizing for mission.  She has written a number of meditations and alternative worship services highlighting anti-racism/pro-reconciliation, mindfulness, 16 Core Competencies of Ministry, and the Lord's Prayer.

Jen is a total church-nerd which means nothing more or less than she has a deep love of Christ's church and its capacity to transform lives, communities, and the world. She has been involved in all levels of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from Area and Regional boards, to the General Board, Administrative Committee, Search Committee for GMP, and planning/education committees for General Assembly (organized the Innovate Learning Track). She believes that faith is something that should be as natural as breathing. When we create safe spaces for real dialogue, build relationships instead of programs, and give permission for folks to explore and ask questions about our traditions, scripture and our shared experience, amazing things happen.

Jen hails from Maple Leaf, a tiny village in the Ottawa Valley, lived for 18 years in Toronto, and pastored in small-town Nova Scotia and Guelph, Ontario.  She was raised in the Brethren in Christ movement as a child, spent adolescent years with them as a camp counselor but taught Sunday school and worshiped with the Baptist Convention of Ontario & Quebec.  As a young adult, she fell in with the Disciples of Christ where she found a faith community that built on her deep scriptural roots, but gave new language and permission to explore God, church and spirituality in new, progressive ways.

Jen calls Windsor, Ontario home, spends free moments growing green edible things in the backyard, enjoys oil painting, singing playing piano and mandolin, and writing.
